The League Managers Association (LMA) has commissioned the bespoke production of the Sir Alex Ferguson Trophy to mark the 50th Manager of the Year Award. The trophy has been designed and crafted by a team of expert silversmiths at Thomas Lyte, one of London’s finest designers and makers of exquisite sporting trophies. Operating one of the country’s largest workshops Thomas Lyte are appointed Goldsmiths and Silversmiths to Her Majesty The Queen.
The award is the most prestigious in a manager’s career, acknowledging their exceptional achievements during the season, and the highlight of the LMA Annual Awards ceremony. The winner is voted for by all LMA members and is won by the manager who has made the greatest use of the resources available in the current campaign. The manager can be from a Premier League, Sky Bet Championship, Sky Bet League 1 or League 2 club.
The LMA is delighted that Sir Alex thoroughly approved of the concept and agreed to give his name to the trophy. He has been actively involved in the project right from the start, through the design stage and including visiting the workshop during the trophy’s final stages of manufacture.
Sir Alex Ferguson said: “It is a fantastic honour and I am very proud to have the LMA Manager of the Year trophy named after me. When you look at the list of managers that have won this trophy going right back to 1968 it is very humbling and a reminder of the various winners achievements. There’s no doubt that the likes of Sir Matt Busby, Bill Shankly, Bob Paisley, Brian Clough to highlight just a few were absolute legends and they left a fantastic legacy of how their teams played. And the current holder, Claudio Ranieri, what he achieved with Leicester City last year was nothing short of miraculous. He was a very worthy winner, there’s no doubt about that.”
This modern trophy with art deco routes stands 60cms tall, weighs 8.2Kg and is hand crafted from 4Kgs of sterling silver. The trophy has 2 plinths; one containing the 49 previous winners, the trophy’s legacy, and the second plinth will be used for this year’s 50th winner and all subsequent winners. As well as the brand new trophy, 50 commemorative medals have been created to be presented to each previous winner, and will be collected at the LMA Annual Awards Dinner in London on May 22nd by the manager or a family representative.
Kevin Baker, Founder and CEO of Thomas Lyte said: “We are fortunate to be the makers of the 2014 Emirates FA Cup and many other leading trophies in the world of sport, we are though privileged to be selected to design and make perhaps one of the most important trophies in sporting history. The new Sir Alex Ferguson Trophy for the LMA Manger of the Year represents 50 years of vital endeavour in professional football achievement. Thomas Lyte have worked alongside the LMA for a number of years now and the partnership is one that we sincerely value. We congratulate all of the nominees and look forward to hearing the announcement of the 50th “Manager of the Year."
